The wigs for both of my cosplays I'm working on for an upcoming anime convention are in my eyes, pretty much complete, so I decided to make a blog post about them.
Initially, I was going to just work on a cosplay of Nitocris's Alter version from FGO (her Heroic Spirit event outfit), but after some consideration I decided I wanted to work on a second cosplay I had been wanting to do for a while but have been admittedly too scared of other's reactions in the past to commit to.

I've always thought a beach version of Cirno's tanned/summer version would be really silly and fun, but you already see darker skinned cosplayers getting bullied enough about other cosplays, and considering the way the Touhou fandom is in some corners of the internet, I have always been hesitant.

Click if you want to read my mini yap session about my past cosplay anxieties (ᵕ — ᴗ —) For some backstory, when I was younger I spent too much time in certain communities to where when I went to my very first anime convention, I actually felt physically sick with dread as to what other people's reactions would be to me cosplaying a non-black character (Futaba Sakura from P5) that I had always been so excited to do. This may sound dramatic to some of you reading, but I was actually very very nervous! During the event, I had people asking to take pictures and saying they liked my cosplay, but all I was thinking about was "What if they're going to post my pictures online and make fun of me??" I also generally thought I was too tall, and my makeup was bad, and the cosplay was missing items and not quite accurate and etc. etc... I was a very insecure teenager back then !

Ultimately, it showed in my body language and although I did have fun later on, I was very anxious the whole time during the con. However, after this -- as well another convention where I failed to talk to anyone -- I wanted things to be different this time, so I decided to bite the bullet and just go ahead and do the fucking cosplay!!! After all, I'm not paying that much money for a cosplay or access to the anime convention itself to sulk around against a wall all day, I'd like to have some fun!

For Nitocris, I began with a long, white wig base. I have no experience styling a wig or making my own cosplay, so I actually fucked it up quite bad the first time around.

A scary sight indeed..

I bought a new one and decided to try again. I started by teasing and flat-ironing the wig, and then later cutting it the appropriate length while I had it on.

Before and after the cut.

I actually had an older, halloween wig on hand so I decided to dye it black with fabric dye and then shear it so it could fit better underneath the white one. Afterwards, I attached it to the white one with Uhu Glue.

My wonky plan and me blowdrying the wig after it dried.

After this, I used an airbrush to add black streaks to it and styled it with Got2b spray, and fabric glue. I measured wire to fit the circumference of my head and then used tape and fake blue and yellow flowers to make a flower crown in place of her striped headband as I thought it would be cute. Unsurprisingly, there are issues with the flowers on the flower crown falling off because tape is not very secure, so I decided to pin them together as well. I made the ears with ABS plastic sheets, fabric glue, and royal blue + golden satin, following the tutorial embeded below.

The flower crown and ears.

The tutorial I used! Nitocris has anubis ears, though they really do resemble bunny ears enough to use it.

Besides some cleaning up being needed (family members kept coming in and knocking it down onto the floor cause it was too close to the door) I think it looks alright. For the little bending hairs, I glued two pieces of EVA foam together and then made a base with mod podge so the acrylic paint I have would stick better.

Cirno's wig was much easier as the base I purchased was shorter. I ended up having to just cut the front bangs since they were way too long.

Biscuit hair clips to part the sides.. did not hold very well (^ ^;;;;)

Afterwards, I teased, sprayed and flat-ironed + styled together a large middle bang. However, I took too long waiting to flat-iron it after spraying, so not all the hairs kept their length and upclose it has a weird texture. I'm still learning though, so I tried not to be too hard on myself. It would've been better with a steamer which I don't have on hand.

I COULD'VE kept it like this but I decided to style it since I felt like it would've looked weird with the awkwardly styled bangs, which I honestly half regret and half don't cause it in hindsight it looked fine as is to me and I dunno if it necessarily looks better with it or not.. But I ended up using Got2b to spike 2 additional bang pieces and also fluffing the hair with a flat iron and combing through after curling. I messed this up by holding the flat iron in place too long and actually burning the hair.....but it looks...decent?

That's like honestly kind of my thoughts on the whole thing! Like, it looks decent and vaguely resembles the character and what I wanted so that's all that matters. I dunno if that's bad or not.... Anyways, I ordered a bikini for the Cirno cosplay and plan to add on to that too. I also have been working on the dress for the Nitocris one, plus am making wings for Cirno's, so I will update on that soon!

Today I completed my first ever personal clay project! It took me about 5.2 hours and I used air dry clay. You can see my process in the embeded video below.
My friend said these sorts of videos would be better narrated, so I'll be sure to do that next time.

Materials
  • Air dry clay
  • Gouache Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • X-acto Knife
  • Beaded bracelet making kit (bracelet, clear string, keyring)
