Hi, it's been a while!
It is now May and the convention is officially within a few weeks from today, so I decided to issue an update. Last time I've posted my progess, I was doing two cosplays. However, I eventually realized it is not worth it to do a cosplay of a character who you do not genuinely like/ would enjoy cosplaying just because the cosplay itself is niche or you look like them. I personally would've much rather cosplayed Nitocris's normal version, as her (coincidentally also) swimsuit/summer event outfit is fun and silly and I have been wanting to do so for about 3 years now. But, my ego got in the way (I didn't wanna do what everyone else was doing) and my interest in her Alter's cosplay waned quickly.

PEAK character design.

If you do not have the passion for something, you will not want to power through and finish it when things get tough, and that's exactly what happened when I was looking over her dress for the cosplay. It also felt really rushed and I would just rather not finish it. I also generally feel like I match the personality of regular Nitocris more anyways. I saw 2-3 Cirno's at my last convention, but because I have a passion for it and like the character, it became irrelevant to me. This is the cosplay I've decided to power through with...and finished!
For my Cirno cosplay, I eventually updated my plans to be on paper since I started working with the wings, however, things definitely did not go as expected :( but do they ever really?

My final outfit plan..

I began by making a mock miniature set-up of what I wanted the wings to look like. I had to actually look at a lot of weird crystal structure stuff for this, because there's not really any youtube tutorials besides one for Flandre's. I chose cardboard because I had a lot of boxes at home, but will soon realize this to be a grave mistake.
Eventually, I just ended up using an old Deviantart cosplay tutorial for the shape of the wings, and then hotglued it into a 3D shape.

My mock wing, and the cosplay tutorial. Credits to waterbottledesu on Devianart.

I originally was going to paint the wings white, and use light blue paint over it, then seal them with mod podge, like the tutorial said. So, I bought more white acrylic paint. However, I then decided to buy iridescent cellophane party favor bags and glue those to the wings, to try to make a nice, shiny ice crystal effect.

Left to right: 2D pattern, putting the cellophane on, and my plans with the wings.

However, as I've said earlier, cardboard was a grave mistake. As I was working on this, I had the plan to use wirehangers to support the wings and get them to point the way I want! But I then realized....

....cardboard is very heavy..

So then I decided to try magnets glued to the cardboard, and then onto medical tape to attach it to my skin! And then I realized...

...The human body has quite a bit of curves in the spine....

My attempts of making use of these wings. I even cut straps off of my old highschool backpack...

So now I am not quite so sure what to do! I have these wings but nothing to put them on. I can't exactly wear a backplate because I'm wearing a bikini so Cirno may not just have any wings for this time... Speaking of the bikini...this thing arrived from Aliexpress and had no underwear!! So, I got myself some shorts with my floatie, as well as some new tights that were closer to my skin color. While I waited for those things to arrive, I made some adjustments to the cosplay. I cut the back of the the bikini so I could tie it to be tighter around my chest, painted some of my yellow flowers to look more like a sunflower, and added a red ribbon and lace trim.

Flower, ribbon, and lace.

After cleaning up the hot glue and paints, I then made a bracelet for my cosplay (^ ^

During this time, I also made a few changes to my wig, since I felt lke it looked really messy. Because I played DDR last time I went to a con, I decied to test it out by jumping around and pretending to play DDR for a bit, and eventually it devolved into me teaching myself how to Hit The Quan for some godforsaken reason. Anyways, after this, my stuff arrived and my mom gave me a manual air pump for the floatie which took me about 30 minutes to blow up. I then added vines to it.

After this, the cosplay was finally ready to try on. I plan on making some adjustments, but overall this is the final look.

Honestly, I actually wore this with bloomers originally and kind of like that look better, but I guess I'll have to compare later.
Speaking of comparing, I also had drawn both my plans and made a little picture comparing the imagined vs end result.

Overall this was really fun and easy to work on for my 2nd (crafting involved) cosplay! Anyways as I am typing this it is almost 12AM so therefore it is time for me to listen to my puppyboy anime ASMR and go to sleep, I will update the site in the morning with some other stuff and hopefully start on the "about me" page tomorrow!

The wigs for both of my cosplays I'm working on for an upcoming anime convention are in my eyes, pretty much complete, so I decided to make a blog post about them.
Initially, I was going to just work on a cosplay of Nitocris's Alter version from FGO (her Heroic Spirit event outfit), but after some consideration I decided I wanted to work on a second cosplay I had been wanting to do for a while but have been admittedly too scared of other's reactions in the past to commit to.

I've always thought a beach version of Cirno's tanned/summer version would be really silly and fun, but you already see darker skinned cosplayers getting bullied enough about other cosplays, and considering the way the Touhou fandom is in some corners of the internet, I have always been hesitant.

The two cosplays I am working on. Left is Nitocris, right is Cirno

Click if you want to read my mini yap session about my past cosplay anxieties (ᵕ — ᴗ —) For some backstory, when I was younger I spent too much time in certain communities to where when I went to my very first anime convention, I actually felt physically sick with dread as to what other people's reactions would be to me cosplaying a non-black character (Futaba Sakura from P5) that I had always been so excited to do. This may sound dramatic to some of you reading, but I was actually very very nervous! During the event, I had people asking to take pictures and saying they liked my cosplay, but all I was thinking about was "What if they're going to post my pictures online and make fun of me??" I also generally thought I was too tall, and my makeup was bad, and the cosplay was missing items and not quite accurate and etc. etc... I was a very insecure teenager back then !

Ultimately, it showed in my body language and although I did have fun later on, I was very anxious the whole time during the con. However, after this -- as well another convention where I failed to talk to anyone -- I wanted things to be different this time, so I decided to bite the bullet and just go ahead and do the fucking cosplay!!! After all, I'm not paying that much money for a cosplay or access to the anime convention itself to sulk around against a wall all day, I'd like to have some fun!

For Nitocris, I began with a long, white wig base. I have no experience styling a wig or making my own cosplay, so I actually fucked it up quite bad the first time around.

A scary sight indeed..

I bought a new one and decided to try again. I started by teasing and flat-ironing the wig, and then later cutting it the appropriate length while I had it on.

Before and after the cut.

I actually had an older, halloween wig on hand so I decided to dye it black with fabric dye and then shear it so it could fit better underneath the white one. Afterwards, I attached it to the white one with Uhu Glue.

My wonky plan and me blowdrying the wig after it dried.

After this, I used an airbrush to add black streaks to it and styled it with Got2b spray, and fabric glue. I measured wire to fit the circumference of my head and then used tape and fake blue and yellow flowers to make a flower crown in place of her striped headband as I thought it would be cute. Unsurprisingly, there are issues with the flowers on the flower crown falling off because tape is not very secure, so I decided to pin them together as well. I made the ears with ABS plastic sheets, fabric glue, and royal blue + golden satin, following the tutorial embeded below.

The flower crown and ears.

The tutorial I used! Nitocris has anubis ears, though they really do resemble bunny ears enough to use it.

Besides some cleaning up being needed (family members kept coming in and knocking it down onto the floor cause it was too close to the door) I think it looks alright. For the little bending hairs, I glued two pieces of EVA foam together and then made a base with mod podge so the acrylic paint I have would stick better.

Cirno's wig was much easier as the base I purchased was shorter. I ended up having to just cut the front bangs since they were way too long.

Biscuit hair clips to part the sides.. did not hold very well (^ ^;;;;)

Afterwards, I teased, sprayed and flat-ironed + styled together a large middle bang. However, I took too long waiting to flat-iron it after spraying, so not all the hairs kept their length and upclose it has a weird texture. I'm still learning though, so I tried not to be too hard on myself. It would've been better with a steamer which I don't have on hand.

I COULD'VE kept it like this but I decided to style it since I felt like it would've looked weird with the awkwardly styled bangs, which I honestly half regret and half don't cause it in hindsight it looked fine as is to me and I dunno if it necessarily looks better with it or not.. But I ended up using Got2b to spike 2 additional bang pieces and also fluffing the hair with a flat iron and combing through after curling. I messed this up by holding the flat iron in place too long and actually burning the hair.....but it looks...decent?

That's like honestly kind of my thoughts on the whole thing! Like, it looks decent and vaguely resembles the character and what I wanted so that's all that matters. I dunno if that's bad or not.... Anyways, I ordered a bikini for the Cirno cosplay and plan to add on to that too. I also have been working on the dress for the Nitocris one, plus am making wings for Cirno's, so I will update on that soon!

Today I completed my first ever personal clay project! It took me about 5.2 hours and I used air dry clay. You can see my process in the embeded video below.
My friend said these sorts of videos would be better narrated, so I'll be sure to do that next time.

Materials
  • Air dry clay
  • Gouache Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • X-acto Knife
  • Beaded bracelet making kit (bracelet, clear string, keyring)
